Description:In response to a request from the United Paperworkers International Union, potential exposures to polychlorinated dibenzo-p- dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) and chlorinated volatile organic compounds were evaluated at the Boise Cascade (SIC- 2621), Rumford, Maine. Air samples and wipe samples were collected and analyzed. Airborne toxicity equivalent (I-TEQ) concentrations of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) ranged from 0.01 to 0.06 picograms (pg) per cubic meter. The highest concentrations were detected in the hardwood bleach facility and at the hardwood rewind station. TEQ levels in the surface wipe samples ranged from 13 to 651pg/square meter in the bleach facility and from 86 to 1049pg/square meter in the paper mill. Area concentration of chloroform (67663) near ports of pulp bleaching rinse tanks ranged from 1.8 to 116mg/m3 and were highest at the hypochlorite stage. Serum samples collected from community residents, low exposure potential workers and high exposure potential workers showed no appreciable differences among the exposure groups for specific PCDDs or PCDF. Neither exposure group nor duration in high potential exposure jobs was related to PCDD and PCDF serum levels. The authors conclude that no clear relationships were found between PCDDs and PCDFs in workers and exposure on the job. The authors recommend that smoking and eating in exposure areas be prohibited and the use of personal protective equipment to reduce dermal contact be encouraged. Periodic exposure monitoring should be conducted.
