Description:In response to a request from management and labor at the Kaiser Aluminum Company (SIC-3463), Oxnard, California, an evaluation was made of ergonomic conditions at the company. The aluminum forging facility had eight major production presses. Musculoskeletal system strain injuries accounted for 38% of all injuries reported in 1992. Similar types of injuries accounted for over 50% of the total injuries reported in 1994 in the forging area. Job analyses of five press operations showed a potential risk for musculoskeletal injury. The workers were at risk for back injury due to a combination of repetitive and sometimes awkward postures required to manually handle aluminum pieces throughout the entire pressing process. Removing the aluminum pieces from the preheat oven presented risks of upper and back extremity musculoskeletal strain. The piece handling and lubrication of the die press area presented risks of lower and upper extremity musculoskeletal strain from repeated awkward postures. The use of tongs presented risks of strain to the wrists due to the orientation of the handle which places the wrist in a deviated posture during many tasks. The authors conclude that there was a potential for overexertion injuries to the back and upper extremity in press machine operators. The authors recommend measures to reduce the risk for musculoskeletal injury and disease, along with guidelines for establishing an ergonomics program.
