Description:In response to the findings in a series of industrial hygiene evaluations conducted by NIOSH and the American Petroleum Institute, a health hazard evaluation was conducted at two Exxon service stations (SIC-5541) in New Jersey. Exposures to oxygenated gasoline containing methyl-tert-butyl-ether (1634044) (MtBE) were monitored using conventional air sampling and by videotaping work activities. Personal breathing zone analyses indicated that total hydrocarbon exposure was 1.89 parts per million (ppm) and ranged from 0.43 to 4.43ppm and that MtBE exposures ranged from 0.08 to 1.27ppm with a geometric mean time weighted average of 0.38ppm. Both these readings were significantly lower than the most stringent requirements. However, peak exposures to total hydrocarbons were as high as 327ppm. By studying the video tapes, it was noted that peak exposures occurred during manual refueling. The authors conclude that peak exposures were as much as 130 times greater than time weighted average exposures. The authors recommend that improved vapor recovery system effectiveness and attendant work practices be applied throughout the industry.
