Description:In response to a request from the United Steelworkers Union, Local 1150, a study was begun of possible hazardous working conditions at the Rex-Nord Bearing Company (SIC-3563), Indianapolis, Indiana. Employees had reported skin irritation and respiratory difficulties which they felt may have been due to cutting fluid exposure. The company employed about 400 workers on three shifts, and manufactured bearings for agricultural machinery. Employee interviews and medical records did not indicate that respiratory disease was associated with cutting fluid exposure, but contact dermatitis, skin infections and skin burns were reported. An Aerocology Mist Collector was connected to frequently used grinding machines. All but three machines were equipped with splash guards. Analysis of air quality did not reveal the presence of nitrosamines. However, nitrosamines and microbiological contaminants were present in the cutting fluids. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard existed at the facility related to exposure to nitrosamines in cutting fluids. The authors recommend that skin contact with the cutting fluids should be avoided, by providing additional or more effective splash guards, providing proper personal protective equipment, and encouraging good personal hygiene.
