Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA 86-246-1736: Roth’s Foodliners, Albany, Oregon

  In response to a request from Roth's Foodliners (SIC-5411), Albany, Oregon, a dermatitis outbreak among employees was investigated. This request followed two reports of phytophotodermatitis in courtesy clerks at one store. Employees of three stores in the Roth's Foodliner chain were surveyed by questionnaire. Twenty-one cases of phytophotodermatitis were identified from the 57 employees completing the questionnaires. The dates of onset of the dermatitis coincided in many cases with an increase in sales of celery. Workers with dermatitis were more likely to have used a tanning salon compared with noncases and the most severe reactions were seen in those with exposure to tanning booths. Erythema followed by hyperpigmentation were induced on the arms of NIOSH investigators after they were rubbed with celery stalks and exposed to ultraviolet light. The psoralen (66977) content of the celery leaves was found to be four times higher in the celery sold by the Albany store compared with that sold by the Corvallis store. Recommendations to reduce potential exposure to psoralen containing produce items were presented as were guidelines for decreasing exposure to natural or artificial ultraviolet light.
