  In response to a request from Uniroyal, Incorporated (SIC-3011) concerning a possibly excessive incidence of coronary heart disease at the Opelika, Alabama facility, the incidence of mortality among employees was investigated. The facility employed 1,200 workers in the production of tires. Death certificates were examined for all workers who had died since operations began at the facility. Cause specific proportionate mortality ratios of the workforce were computed and compared to those from the US population. No unusual conditions were noted on a walk-through survey of the facility. Forty-two deaths were identified during the years 1963 through 1982. No excesses were identified for mortality from cardiovascular disease or coronary heart disease. A slight increase was seen for all cancers, most of which was attributable to cancer of the digestive system (two cases of colon cancer and one case of liver cancer). The authors recommend that continued surveillance of mortality and morbidity be conducted at this facility.
