Description:In response to a confidential request, worker exposures to arsenic (7440382) were evaluated in the uranium enrichment process of the Lockheed Martin Utility Systems, Inc. (SIC-2819) gaseous diffusion facility in Portsmouth, Ohio. An industrial hygiene survey was conducted and area air samples analyzed for uranium (7440611) and radon (10043922). Sampling for arsenic was conducted in the process building, and during welding on equipment removed from the process. Time weighted average exposure levels for seven area samples ranged from nondetectable to 0.7 microgram/cubic meter arsenic. Personal breathing zone samples from 14 workers ranged from nondetectable to 109 micrograms/cubic meter arsenic. All six of the workers who had personal breathing zone samples with detectable arsenic levels wore protective clothing and supplied air respirators. Time weighted average exposures to total uranium were well below the NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 2 micrograms/cubic meter. The author concludes that there was a potential for worker exposure to arsenic during maintenance activities on uranium enrichment equipment
workers performing these activities used protective clothing and respiratory protection. The author recommends that monitoring for arsenic exposure should focus on high level and poorly defined exposures, and that efforts be made to keep arsenic exposures as low as possible.
