Description:Possible hazardous working conditions were investigated during asphalt construction on the Florida Turnpike. Over a 2-day period, about 999 metric tons of conventional asphalt were laid by ten workers of Martin Paving Company (SIC-1611). On two other days, 1,505 metric tons of crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt were laid by the same workers. The study indicated that higher asphalt fume emissions were noted at source locations with higher area air sample concentrations of total particulate, respirable particulate, benzene soluble particulate, total polycyclic aromatic compounds, benzothiazole (95169), and other sulfur containing compounds during the CRM asphalt paving period. All the personal breathing zone exposures monitored were below the current NIOSH recommended exposure limits for asphalt fumes. Pavers were not experiencing symptoms or bronchial difficulties associated with paving operations. However, data provided were from only a very small sample size and may reflect production and weather conditions specific to this site. The authors suggest that additional site locations should be used to gather data.
