Description:In response to a request from the management at the Butte Sheltered Workshop (SIC-3131), Butte, Montana, an investigation was begun into possible exposure to naphthalene (91203). The shelter employed about 12 workers in the felt bootliner factory. Large sheets of felt were cut into boot liners and assembled by workers using sewing machines. The felt was treated with naphthalene. A total of 17 naphthalene breathing zone air samples were collected. Naphthalene concentrations ranged from less than 0.001mg/m3 to 0.6mg/m3, well within the evaluation criterion of 50mg/m3. Most of the workers at this site had experienced irritation to the hands and eyes. The author concludes that a health hazard did not exist at the time of this study
however, the author presented recommendations to help prevent future problems as production was low at the time of the survey. The recommendations include installing ventilation in close proximity to the sewing machines and cutting machines, installing a humidifier in the assembly area, and providing workers with an annual physical, emphasizing the conditions of the skin and eyes.
