Description:As part of a study on occupational exposure to crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt and conventional asphalt, an investigation was conducted at the Spartan Paving Company (SIC-1611), Lansing, Michigan. The company was involved in paving activities at interstate highway sites. Field exposure assessment was conducted during days of paving using CRM asphalt and 2 days of paving using conventional asphalt, with the same ten workers. Total particulate, respirable particulate and benzene soluble particulate concentrations were higher during CRM asphalt paving than during conventional asphalt paving. More benzothiazole and other sulfur containing compounds were generated during CRM paving. The study showed that asphalt fume emissions were below current NIOSH recommended exposure limits or other relevant criteria. During the CRM asphalt paving, the workers reported an eight-fold increase in the number of health symptoms and a 14-fold increase in symptoms per hour, compared with conventional asphalt paving. Most of the increase in symptoms during CRM asphalt paving was in nose and throat symptoms. The authors recommend that efforts be made to reduce exposures during asphalt paving.
