Description:In response to a request for assistance from both employee and management at the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Chicago Port (SIC- 9512), Chicago, Illinois, an investigation was begun into possible exposure to insecticides and fungicides during inspection of animal trophies imported into the United States. Five wildlife inspectors performed animal trophy inspections at the Chicago port. Bulk samples were taken from material from seven shipments, and personal breathing zone air samples were collected during inspections. Pesticides were detected in all of the bulk samples collected, including lindane (58899), carbaryl (63252), fenitrothion (122145), and DDT (50293). The disposable nitrile gloves worn by the inspectors did not sufficiently protect them from skin contact due to the short length of the gloves. Personal breathing zone air sampling did not contain detectable levels of the pesticides and did not suggest the need for respiratory protection. The author concludes that a potential health hazard existed from exposure to residual pesticides on imported animal trophies. The author recommends that measures be taken to prevent skin contact with animal trophies and to minimize the potential for aerosolization of particulates.
