Description:In response to a request from the United Steel Workers of America regarding possible exposure of workers involved in welding operations to smoke, a study was begun at EAZ-Lift Towing Systems, Elkhart, Indiana. The company manufactured towing hitches for trailers. All welding operations were gas metal arc (MIG). Each welding station was equipped with local exhaust ventilation. Breathing zone air samples were tested for total particulates, nickel (7440020), manganese (7439965), chromium (7440473), and iron oxides. Carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO) levels were measured using a direct reading meter, and worker exposures to CO were evaluated by measuring preshift and postshift expired CO. Except for total welding particulates, all measurements were within acceptable limits
total welding particulates exceeded the 5mg/m3 recommended level for two of nine welders. Medical questionnaires were administered to ten workers. Half the workers reported cough or congestion related to welding exposures. The author recommends that improvements be made in the exhaust ventilation system
pedestal fans were interfering with the exhaust ventilation. The author suggests that serious consideration be given to instituting medical testing prior to employment and that periodic exams be used to spot problems before they become serious.
