Description:In response to a joint request from the management of Weyerhaeuser Paper Company and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Union, an evaluation was begun of potential hazards at the company's location in Belleville, Illinois (SIC-2653). Concern was expressed over cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) arising among workers involved in the production of cardboard packaging for various consumer products. In the 3-year work period from 1993 through 1995, 13 musculoskeletal disorders affecting the back, neck, and upper extremity were recorded in the OSHA 200 logs. Of the 13, 12 were workers in the Finishing Department and one was a worker employed in the corrugating area. Three disorders resulted in a mean of 26 lost workdays, and six resulted in a mean of 44 restricted workload days. Repeated trauma was the cause of six injuries, including three cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Employees in some jobs performed activities that may increase the risk of back and upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders, including low bends and long reaches, forceful lifts and pushes involving stacks of boxes, and repetitive motions to fed machines and fold boxes. Recommendations were made in the following areas, engineering controls, administrative, and training.
