Description:In response to a request from management at the US Postal Service Middlesex Central District Office, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the Acton Post Office, Acton, Massachusetts (SIC-4311). A walk-through inspection was conducted to assess potential sources of formaldehyde (50000) or other contaminants which could cause the eye and upper respiratory irritation reported by the workers. Formaldehyde concentrations of 0.2 and 0.38 parts per million (ppm) had previously been measured in the facility. Four personal breathing zone and four area air samples were collected to evaluate exposures. On the sampling day, formaldehyde concentrations were about 0.01ppm, well below levels which usually cause eye and upper respiratory irritation. However, the use of a formaldehyde containing floor wax in the workroom may be a source of such exposure and concentrations at the time of its application could have been sufficient to cause the symptoms in some individuals. A recommendation was made to select more occupant friendly products, to replace the wax, and to notify the supplier of the Tuf-Scrub hand cleaner that there is a discrepancy between the container label and the material safety data sheet so that a correction can be made.
