Description:In response to a request from the Corporate Medical Director, an investigation was begun into a cluster of brain cancer cases at the Illinois Power Company (SIC-4911), Baldwin, Illinois. Three cases of brain cancer had been diagnosed among employees between 1990 and 1994. Baldwin was a fossil fuel station producing electricity, consisting of three generating units. Each of the three cancer cases had a glial cell tumor
two had an astrocytoma and one had an ependymoma. They had worked at Baldwin from 14 to 19 years. Each had worked as a maintenance mechanic for nearly all of their employment at Baldwin. Measurements taken of extremely low frequency electric and magnetic field strength levels inside and outside the facility showed findings which were below the current occupational exposure ceiling limit. Extended periods of time were spent at high temperatures which raises concern for heat related disorders. The authors conclude that the cause of brain cancer could not be identified. The authors recommend that efforts be made to better control temperature and relative humidity at the workstations. Housekeeping procedures should be improved and the problem of electrical shocks in the parking lots should be examined.
