Description:In response to a request from management and union representatives, an investigation was begun into occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) at BUNDY Corporation (SIC-3499), Cynthiana, Kentucky. BUNDY manufactured specialized small diameter metal tubes for automotive and refrigeration industries. About 200 workers were employed at the site on three shifts. Concern was voiced over possible exposure to EMF generated by high frequency induction welders and other sources. Results indicated that workers who operate butt welder units, the 400 hertz AC welder, or the 10 kilohertz induction units may indeed be exposed to magnetic fields in excess of occupational guidelines. EMF exposure from other sources appears to be below the guidelines. Excess exposures were influenced by the location of the worker in relation to the EMF source, and exposure of extremities. The author concludes that workers operating the butt welder units, the 400 hertz AC welder or the induction heaters were exposed to magnetic fields in excess of applicable occupational limits. The author recommends that workers be located further from the EMF sources. It should be determined what tasks require insertion of hands in close proximity to various sources, and whether these are essential or appropriate.
