Description:In response to a request to assist the Hamilton County General Health District with an assessment of airborne microbiologic aerosols associated with a slope failure at the Rumpke, Inc. (SIC- 4953) landfill in Colerain Township, Ohio, an investigation was conducted at the site. The north slope of the landfill slid into an area excavated by Rumpke Mountain Mining Operations, exposing 20 to 30 acres of garbage. Beginning on March 18, 1996, 9 days after the slide, a mixture of blended cellulose and synthetic fibers was sprayed over the exposed garbage providing a cover layer. That afternoon, investigators conducted an initial walk-through inspection of the landfill and returned on April 3, and 11 to assess general area air concentrations of airborne particles, hydrogen- sulfide (7783064), volatile organic compounds, and bioaerosols. All sampled airborne contaminants were well below the occupational exposure criteria. Isolation of enteric bacterial species around the periphery of the landfill indicated possible microbiologic disseminating from the working face. The highest concentrations of particulates measured were inside the landfill compactor cab. The authors recommend that the landfill compactors be retrofitted with particulate air filters.
