Description:In response to a request from the Local 3840 of the American Federation of Government Employees at the NIOSH Robert A. Taft Laboratories (SIC-8922), Cincinnati, Ohio, an investigation was begun into possible hazards associated with working in the laboratory and animal facilities. There were about 80 Division of Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences (DBBS) research workers who worked directly with toxic substances or hazardous physical agents. An initial walk-through evaluation was performed, and questionnaires completed for 328 laboratory and activity areas. Airborne exposure surveys were also conducted. Twenty-five performance evaluations of fume hood performance were conducted. The authors conclude that exposures to benzene (71432) in the clinical chemistry laboratory and to formaldehyde (50000) in the autopsy room and tissue preparation rooms were not at the lowest feasible level. A need was noted to improve the hazardous material management system including inventory control of procurement, storage, handling, and disposal. A physician should be designated to act as a consultant to the DBBS Safety Committee which, in conjunction with this medical consultant, should review present policies and procedures concerning the DBBS occupational health program and establish clear written policies regarding medical surveillance and immunization requirements of DBBS employees.
