Description:In response to a request from the management, an investigation was begun into possible medical problems reported in workers after two insecticide applications at Progress Federal Savings and Loan (SIC- 6123), in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. Symptoms of tightness in the chest, difficulty speaking, loss of concentration and exhaustion were the primary complaints, mainly in one individual. Symptoms continued to recur in this individual each time the building was entered. At least three other workers experienced some of these symptoms. One of three air samples was positive for chlorpyrifos (2921882) at a concentration of 0.02 microgram per cubic meter (microg/m3). All three air samples were positive for diazinon (333415) at concentrations ranging from 0.06 to 0.13microg/m3. Total organic vapor concentration ranged from 4 to 5mg/m3 and formaldehyde (50000) concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 0.03 part per million (ppm). Following the first insecticide application, a minimum of four persons had acute reactions and a minimum of three persons had acute reactions following the second application. The authors conclude that no evidence was found that current employees were experiencing any ongoing health problems as a result of the insecticide applications. No evidence was found of a current health hazard. The authors recommend that any insecticide be applied during nonworking hours and the building be ventilated following application.
