Description:In response to a request from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (SIC-9631), an investigation was begun of cases of leukemia or Hodgkin's disease which had occurred among employees at the offices in Washington, DC. The building was a nine-story cast concrete office structure. Two leukemia and one Hodgkin's disease cases had been reported among workers who were in their late 20's or early 30's. They had worked in the market branch of the Office of Pipeline and Producer Regulation. Each had offices on the seventh floor and had worked from 3 to 5 years in the building. A walk-through investigation of the building and its environs was performed, and personnel records were used to identify other possible cases. Case finding was performed by interviewing supervisors, workers and union representatives as well. A radiation survey of selected areas of the building showed no levels exceeding usual background levels. No environmental agents were identified or detected that could be associated with the identified cases. A review of the expected number of cases using the standardized incidence ratios indicated that the occurrences did not represent a statistically significant excess incidence for this 5-year period. The authors conclude that it was very likely that there were no building related common causes and that the cases represented a chance clustering.
