Description:In response to a request from Local Union Number 753, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the Uniroyal Facility (SIC-3011), Opelika, Alabama. As part of the production of tires at the site, rubber treads were transported to the tire builder on tread trucks containing leaves. Employees performing the removal of rubber residue from tread leaves complained of headaches, sore throats and burns on their hands and arms which they felt resulted from chemical exposures. Klean-Strip was the solvent used for residue removal from the tread leaf. The chemical contained approximately 75% methylene-chloride (75092), 10% propylene-dichloride (78875), 5% methanol (67561), and 1% ammonia (7664417), plus a thickening agent, a vaporization retardant, and a surfactant. Area air samples taken 10 to 12 feet from the operation ranged between 9 and 40 parts per million for methylene-chloride vapors. The author concludes that no vapor exposures were found which exceeded regulatory or recommended limits, but several conditions were noted that were conducive to potential health hazards. The author recommends that protective clothing and a solvent vapor cartridge be used by workers during the cleaning operation, and an attempt be made to find alternative leaf cleaning methods which will further reduce the potential for exposure.
