Description:In response to a request from an authorized representative of employees, an investigation was begun into exposure to napthol spirits in the AB Valve Room at the Purdy Company, Burnham, Illinois. The company reconditioned air brakes and wheel assemblies from locomotives and railroad cars. Measurements were taken for the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons and while some type of contaminant was detected, it was not possible to quantify the readings in that interferences from aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons were also present. Detector tube measurements did not record any detectable levels of halogenated hydrocarbons. Smoke tube tests showed the exhaust system to be functioning adequately when activated. No levels of aromatic hydrocarbons were detected. Interviews with four affected employees indicated no respiratory or biological effect which could be associated with inhalation of the naphthol spirits. The authors conclude that there was no hazard from airborne concentrations of napthol spirits at the time of the survey. Skin contact with napthol spirits could promote skin irritation and infection. The authors recommend that the AB Valve Room exhaust fan be in constant operation, particularly when solvent cleaning operations are underway.
