Description:In response to a request from the management of the Ohio Department of Transportation Traffic Maintenance Shop (SIC-2759), Columbus, Ohio, an investigation was conducted of worker exposures to vapors and gases in the silk-screening department. Reports of lethargy and a feeling of inebriation among silk screening department workers prompted the request. The workers associated the feelings with the use of high intensity inks. They were also concerned with a lack of progress in updating the current ventilation system. Area and personal air sampling for cyclohexanone (108941), xylene (1330207), and 2-methoxyethanol (109864) was conducted. Sixteen-time weighted average personal breathing zone samples were taken, along with 21-time weighted average area samples and analyzed for several additional chemicals. Four of the five full shift personal breathing zone samples contained 2-ethoxyethyl-acetate (111159) (2EGEEA) levels which exceeded the full shift time weighted average exposure limit of 0.5 part per million (ppm). These concentrations ranged from 0.52 to 0.87ppm. The author concludes that screen printers were exposed to significant concentrations of 2EGEEA, and that adequate respiratory protection should be supplied by respirators with organic vapor cartridges. Recommendations include continuing the use of respirators pending ventilation system improvements, instituting worker exposure and exposure control monitoring, and considering job design changes.
