Description:As part of a study under an Interagency Agreement with the Federal Highway Administration, a workplace exposure and health assessment were performed during pavement construction on Interstate 8 using crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt and conventional asphalt near Casa Grande, Arizona, performed by the Staker Construction Company (SIC-1611). CRM asphalt was applied on 2 days, and the same workers applied conventional asphalt on 2 days. A survey of symptoms experienced showed little difference between the conventional and the CRM asphalt paving periods with respect to the number of symptoms reported or the rate of their occurrence. Personal breathing zone exposure to asphalt fume emissions as well as other exposure measurements were below current recommended levels and other relevant exposure limits for those substances. Concentrations of total particulate, respirable particulate, soluble particulate, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and other sulfur containing compounds were higher during CRM asphalt paving than during conventional paving, with few exceptions. Even so, there was little difference experienced in symptoms reporting between the two types of paving.
