Description:In response to a confidential employee request, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at Kokoku Rubber (SIC-3016), Richmond, Kentucky. The company produced precision rubber parts primarily from polyisoprene rubber. Industrial hygiene sampling was conducted for nitrogen oxides, aldehydes, and nitrosamines. Thermal desorption tubes were used for the qualitative analyses for airborne chemicals. Low concentrations of nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) were identified. No nitrosamines were found. Aldehydes were below the limit of detection. The thermal desorption tube identified 30 additional airborne contaminants including acetophenone (98862), methyl-styrene (25013154), carbon- disulfide (75150), and sulfur-dioxide (7446095). No heat stress hazard was identified at the time of the visit. Of 11 interviewed employees, nine had worked or currently worked in the vulcanizing department. Of these, seven reported intermittent respiratory symptoms including shortness of breath, chest tightness, and nose and throat irritation while working in that department. The authors conclude that, while no single chemical could be implicated in the health effects reported, the combined effects of the irritants may have contributed to the difficulties. Recommendations included local exhaust system upgrades, medical surveillance, and the implementation of a heat stress program.
