Description:In response to a request from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), an evaluation was made of the potential for Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service workers to be exposed to pesticides during the inspection of imported plants at the Cargo and Maritime Operations (SIC-9641). An initial site visit was made in Miami, Florida on May 7 through 9, 1996. Environmental monitoring was conducted, and personal air samples taken. Pesticide residues were detected on 30 of the 37 samples collected from commodities inspected by Cargo employees at various importer warehouses. A total of 86 different compounds comprising 18 different pesticides were detected. The fungicide benomyl (17804352) was the most commonly detected and was also the compound found in the highest concentration. Several classes of pesticides were detected including organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethrins, and organochlorines. No detectable pesticide residues were found on surface wipe samples collected from desktops in the main USDA Cargo office. At the Maritime operations, detectable levels of pesticide residues were found on four of ten samples, with six different compounds being identified. The use of gloves to protect against pesticide residues was not uniform.
