  In response to a request from the United States Marshals Service (SIC-9221), Washington, DC, an investigation was begun into possible worker exposure to electromagnetic fields during the use of hand held and walk through metal detectors located in various United States courthouses. The evaluation was conducted at federal courthouses in 15 states. During this evaluation both old and new model metal detector units were evaluated. However, few were older than 10 years and most were in good operating condition. Sub-radiofrequency magnetic fields were measured inside the arch of walk through detectors and outside, away from the surface of the arch. The results of measurements found on 52 different walk through metal detectors indicated that personnel who work in close proximity to these units, under normal operating conditions, are not exposed to magnetic field levels in the sub-radiofrequency regions in excess of occupational guidelines. For hand held metal detectors, all measurements made were also below the same guidelines.
