Description:In response to a joint request from James River Corporation and the Graphic Communications International Union, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the James River Corporation (SIC-3081) packaging unit located in Greensburg, Indiana. The facility manufactured plastic films, printed on plastic films, and manufactured bags from plastic films. Some employees had reported experiencing nausea in the Extrusion Department during polyethylene film extrusion. An offensive smoke was generated during the cleaning of hot metal extruder dies in the Maintenance Department die shop. There were occasional employee complaints of headache and nausea in the Printing Department and poor air quality was suggested in the Bag Department. While the results of tests indicated that there was a variety of substances found in the air samples of the various departments, quantitative measurements indicated that these substances were all below exposure limits. The formaldehyde (50000) levels reported may be the only exception. The author concludes that airborne concentrations of substances measured were below levels believed to be hazardous to human health. The author recommends that ventilation in the Bag Department be improved to reduce carbon-monoxide (630080) exposures, and that formaldehyde concentrations be monitored in the Bag and Printing Departments.
