Description:In response to a request from the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Occupational Health and Safety, an investigation was begun into noise exposures at Brady Airfield Air Traffic Approach Control Tower (SIC-9621), Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Concern was expressed regarding loud tone bursts and static that air traffic control (ATC) specialists experienced on an intermittent basis through their radio headsets or telephone landlines at the controller's radar screen. The communication system relied on head worn microphone/receiver sets. Recordings of normal air to ground and ground to air communications were made for normal communication traffic with and without the electronic compression unit. Unstructured interviews were held with the staff at the field and a review was conducted of audiometric examinations given in conjunction with annual medical examinations for air traffic controllers. The authors conclude that a hazard to the hearing of the ATC specialists did not exist, but there were deficiencies observed in the manner in which the compression unit was used and in the hearing tests given to the controllers. A moderately high level of background noise was also detected which may interfere with speech intelligibility. The authors recommend measures to alleviate these deficiencies.
