Description:In response to a management request from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Warm Springs Regional Fisheries Center (SIC-0921), Warm Springs, Georgia, an investigation was begun into possible exposures to the dinoflagellate Pfiesteria-piscicida during work activities. The Center was established in 1899, employed 12 people
missions included propagating and replenishing the endangered short nosed sturgeon, fish disease diagnostic and fish health certifications services for hatcheries, and providing technical support to fisheries and the aquaculture industry. A well was the source of the water supply for the Warm Springs hatchery
P-piscicida was not known to inhabit wells or inland waters. The study indicated that at this time the employees are unlikely to come into contact with P- piscicida contaminated water or infected fish. Workers at the Bear Bluff, South Carolina, hatchery could be exposed to P-piscicida if intake waters from an estuary become contaminated. Workers have not reported symptoms which would suggest P-piscicida exposure. The authors do not recommend any changes to be made in current work practices or policies for personal protection equipment at this facility. However, they did note that if workers should begin to conduct studies with the P-piscicida organism, or participate in investigations of fish kills, then appropriate precautions should be developed.
