Description:On March 3-5, 1997, representatives from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) visited the Foss non-woven textile manufacturing plant in Hampton, New Hampshire, in response to a company request for a health hazard evaluation. the request was prompted by the company's concerns about potential hazards of repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and other physical stressors for the manufacturing process workers. There were three objectives of this evaluation: (1) Document the presence of exposure to physical stressors associated with manual material handling (MMH) activities that are known to increase the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs)
(2) Determine the prevalence of WRMSDs associated with MMH activities of manufacturing process workers
(3) Develop recommendations for reducing the physical demands of the jobs, thereby reducing the risk of injury associated with MMH at the manufacturing facility.
