Description:The case of a roofer who died after sustaining a 16-foot fall from the pitched roof of a two-story single-family dwelling was reported. The 32-year-old journeyman roofer was employed by a roofing contractor with five employees. His task was to correct a cosmetic error in the alignment of the shingle tabs of roofing shingles which had been installed 2 weeks prior to the incident. He had a documented history of grand mal epileptic seizures and had received a prescription for a maintenance dose of Dilantin. He had medical clearance to work on flat roofs only. He was working alone at the time of the incident and the fall was unobserved. The cause of death was severe head injuries. It was recommended that the employer ensure that workers with medical conditions or physical limitations not be placed in work situations disallowed by medical certifications, that employers comply with existing State regulations concerning fall protection for workers exposed to fall hazards, and that a formal safety program be developed and implemented by the company.
