Description:

This report concerned the death of a 46-year-old male tree faller who was struck in the back of the head by a falling snag. He was on his first actual day at work. His employer had been selectively cutting timber on a tract of land in a mountainous area. The victim felled and limbed two trees, which were attached to the skidder using logging chains and wire rope chokers and hauled up a logging road by a coworker on a skidder. He then apparently felled a third tree which became lodged in a standing tree and remained held above ground level. He then felled a fourth tree. The victim was apparently struck on the back of his head by one limb of a falling snag and was pinned to the ground by the limb. The victim had not been wearing head protection at the time of the accident. It was recommended that fallers be trained to recognize hazards in the area they are working and that they be provided with proper protective equipment.
