Truck Driver Crushed Between Trailer and Loading Dock- West Virginia

  The case of a 30-year-old male truck driver who died as a result of being trapped between a loading dock and the back of a moving tractor trailer was examined. The driver left the distribution terminal of a multistate motor freight company that employed 450 workers to flag down the driver of a tractor trailer who was backing into an unused dock at the terminal. His purpose was to signal the driver to another dock where he should have parked for loading. The victim apparently exited the building and either fell into the path of the backing vehicle or had attempted to cross behind the moving vehicle. He was trapped between the rear of the trailer and the loading dock. The driver moved forward, releasing the victim, who later died due to blunt force crushing traumatic injuries to the pelvis and abdomen. As he was attempting to walk in an area not designed for foot travel, it was thought that the area may have posed a fall hazard. It is recommended that procedures for directing incoming vehicles to proper work areas be established and implemented, that pedestrian traffic be properly routed, that work areas no longer in service be clearly posted, and that additional mirrors or other devices be installed which would assist drivers in seeing what they are backing into more clearly.
