Electrician Apprentice Dies Following a 33-foot Fall Through a Roof–South Carolina

  This case report concerns an electrician who fell 33 feet through a roof while working to install electrical conduit, wiring, and related components at a dust collecting silo located in the granule facility of a roofing products manufacturer. He was employed by an electrical contractor. The victim and four coworkers arrived at the facility and began work at 7AM. By lunch time, the victim had completed pulling electrical wire through a conduit while standing on a steel platform attached to the side of the silo. The granule facility roof was directly below the platform, approximately 34 inches from the mid rail on the platform. The victim climbed over the top rail of the platform and, with his feet resting on the mid rail, jumped to the granule facility roof. He weighed 235 pounds and broke through the corrugated transite panels, falling to the concrete floor 33 feet below. He died of head trauma. It was recommended that employers evaluate their current safety program and incorporate specific training procedures emphasizing the importance of recognizing and controlling hazards at the work site. Areas of hazard should be identified and both scheduled and unscheduled visits made to the site to check compliance.
