Description:A 26-year-old male choker setter was struck and killed when he walked into the path of a falling tree. The victim had worked for the company for 3 weeks and had been trained according to the written safety policy at the company. The employer was a logging company with 29 employees. The victim was walking to a landing area for a routine lunch break. He apparently was taking a shortcut across the area where the foreman was felling trees using a feller machine. The victim emerged from the brush and walked into the tree fall zone while a tree was coming down. He was struck in the head and killed. Recommendations were made to ensure that employees remain a distance of two tree lengths of the trees being felled from mechanical felling operations, until the machine operator has acknowledged that it is safe to approach more closely, that employers ensure that employees use designated safe routes of travel when leaving their work area, and that the use of high visible clothing be worn as part of the personal protective equipment.
