On February 27, 2003 a 38 year-old farmer died when he fell into a manure spreader and was pulled into the auger. The victim was working by himself cleaning the sides of the spreader tank with a scraper, while standing on the front tire of the spreader. He didn't return to the farm at the usual time so a co-worker went out to the field and found the victim under the auger at approximately 7:30 AM. The co-worker called for emergency services located about 14 miles away. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The spreader was transported to a facility where the body could be extricated. FACE investigators concluded that, to help prevent similar occurrences, farmers and employers should: 1. Remain seated on the tractor while the spreader is in operation. 2. Stop all augers before operators attempt to clean, maintain or work close to the auger. 3. Ensure that employees are trained in and are aware of the potential hazards associated with operating farm machinery by reviewing the operator's manual and other safety precautions intended for specific machinery.
