Description:The fatal accident circumstances and epidemiology report on an incident involving an electrocution is presented. The report is part of a NIOSH program in which data on fatal accidents involving electrocutions or occurring in confined spaces is collected. The accident occurred on March 14, 1985 at a site where a construction company was laying sections of concrete water pipe in the Arizona desert. A cable of the crane used to lift the pipe into place contacted a 3 phase 13,800 Volt overhead power line. One of the workers who was in contact with the crane outrigger was electrocuted. Recommendations for preventing future accidents of this type include deenergizing and grounding distribution and transmission lines if feasible, maintaining a uniform clearance between the crane and the overhead lines, and using a single man when it is difficult for the crane operator to use direct observation to maintain proper clearance. Safe work practices as using non conductive tag lines to guide loads, insulating personal protective equipment, and storing materials away from power lines should be practiced.
