Electrician Dies After Fall in South Carolina

  The case of a 34 year old male electrician who fell 12 feet from a scaffold that he was erecting was examined. His employer was an interstate electrical contractor that employed 250 workers. The victim had been on the job for 2 days. The victim and a helper were installing conduit directly below a steel beam framework of the ceiling in a new shopping mall. The 1/2 inch conduit would encase the conductors for the structure's lighting system. The victim and helper were using a mobile aluminum tubular frame scaffold to access their work area. The scaffold was three tiers high. The work area was about 22 feet above ground. During construction of the third tier, the helper returned to a prior work area to retrieve one of the pieces of the scaffolding. On his return to the present work site he found the victim lying on the concrete floor, face down, apparently having falling from the scaffold. Head trauma was determined to be the cause of death. It was recommended that personal protective equipment be provided and used by all employees, that safety training be provided for all new employees, and that working habits of new employees to observed periodically.
