Description:"The NIOSH Bibliography of Communication and Research Products 2023 showcases the institute's comprehensive approach to addressing diverse occupational safety and health challenges across industries. NIOSH's research and communication efforts in 2023 focused on an array of pressing issues affecting workers, including these research highlights: Occupational Disease Prevention - 1) Characterizing dust emissions from grinding engineered and natural stone to help prevent silicosis outbreaks among countertop workers. 2) Estimating the incidence, prevalence, and treatment of mesothelioma among Medicare beneficiaries using claims data. 3) Analyzing 20 years of data on miners' occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica in metal/nonmetal mines. Mental Health and Well-being - 1) Assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and working conditions of health workers. 2) Examining how workplace violence during the pandemic affected the mental health of public health workers. 3) Investigating differences in brain pathobiology between severe and mild traumatic brain injury. 4) Evaluating opioid prescribing patterns and interventions to prevent overuse among World Trade Center Health Program members. Safety Training and Equipment - 1) Testing the effectiveness of respirators and surgical masks as source control devices to prevent disease transmission. 2) Developing recommendations to improve self-escape training for underground coal miners during emergencies. 3) Surveying oil and gas workers to explore risky driving behaviors, employer safety policies, and factors affecting injury risk. These diverse research projects reveal how NIOSH addresses critical occupational safety and health challenges. They are examples of how NIOSH communicates science through publications, tools, and resources." - NIOSHTIC-2
