Description:Beginning in late 2014, an outbreak of HIV infections spread rapidly among a network of persons who inject drugs (PWID) in the small rural community of Austin in Scott County, Indiana. In January 2015, there were 11 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Scott County. By the end of February, more than 40 new cases were identified, and on March 26, 2015, a public health emergency was declared. By the end of 2017, 223 people had been diagnosed with HIV, and more than 90% of these individuals are co-infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).
