Description:Gestational diabetes (GDM) affects 7%–14% of pregnancies, 240,000 women annually, in the United States1. Women with GDM have up to a 70% chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the decades following the pregnancy. Yet only about 50% of women with GDM receive a postpartum visit and even less are screened for diabetes. Various factors influence low levels of testing2. These factors include: gaps in surveillance systems, errors in documenting GDM care, lack of awareness about the association between GDM and increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
