Description:Oral health is important to general health, yet is often overlooked. During pregnancy, women may be more prone to periodontal (gum) disease and cavities, and research has shown an association between these conditions and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Additionally, a mother's oral health status is a strong predictor of her children's oral health status. Primary care providers often have an opportunity to influence their patients' attitudes and behaviors regarding the importance of oral health during pregnancy. Through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics worked to create Protect Tiny Teeth, an oral health communications resource that aims to facilitate conversations between pregnant women and their health care providers, as well as educate women and families about the importance of oral health.
