Description:Estimates of acute gastrointestinal illness associated with public drinking water systems in the United States range from 4 million to 33 million cases each year. Contaminated food consumed in the United States causes an estimated 48 million cases of acute gastrointestinal illness each year. Of these, approximately 128,000 require hospitalization and 3,000 result in death.
