Description:Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo estudiar los determinantes y características del comportamiento sexual y reproductivo de la población costarricense con edades comprendidas entre 15 y menos de 25 años.
This is a progress report of a national Young Adult Reproductive and Health Survey carried out in Costa Rica during the early months of 1991. This country has undergone significant changes in both mortality and fertility, but the current demographic regime can be described as an example of an incomplete demographic transition. The reason is that the fertility decline observed in the period 1960-1975 stalled and reproductive levels have remained almost stationary since the mid seventies.
Similar to the experience of many other developing countries, the prevailing demographic pattern is one of very early marital, both formal and consensual, union formation. Often it comes as the result, as well as the primary factor, of the high fertility rates observed in women under 20 years of age, that could serve as proxy indicators of the maladies of bulging out-of-wedlock births and significant levels of abortion.
