Description:It has been the practice to revise the International Classification of Diseases every 10 years since 1900 to keep abreast of medical knowledge. Each decennial revision has produced breaks in the comparability of cause-of-death statistics. The degree of discontinuity resulting from the introduction of the Eighth Revision, used beginning with data year 1968, has been considerable for a number of causes of death. An adequate presentation of mortality trends without reference to these discontinuities is impossible.
