Los nitrofenoles incluyen tres compuestos químicos: 2-, 3- y 4-nitrofenol. Su aspecto varía de incoloro a un amarillo pálido. Los nitrofenoles son sólidos. Los nitrofenoles no se liberan desde fuentes naturales, sino que se producen y usan en la producción de tinturas, cauchos, sustancias químicas para el revelado fotográfico, medicamentos, pesticidas y fungicidas (sustancias químicas usadas para matar hongos, como el moho). También se forman en el tubo de escape de los autos. Estos tres nitrofenoles tienen características físicas y químicas únicas y distintos usos industriales.
