Description:"The purpose of this document was to assemble information relevant to hazard waste (HW), decontamination and decommissioning (DD) and clean up work (CW) activities at the Department of Energy (DOE) Fernald site over the past few years and those planned in the next 5 to 10 years, to define demographically the workforce performing these activities, to identify the technologies in use or to be used, and to assemble summary information for potential chemical, mixed, and radiological contamination exposures which may occur during the process. This first phase of the study summarized documentation regarding the work force for use as a foundation on which further studies will be built. The 1,050 acre Fernald site in southwestern Ohio began operating in 1951, processing uranium ore concentrates into high purity uranium metal products. In 1988 the demand for this product dropped sharply. Several regulatory drivers are discussed including the CERCLA Process, the RCRA Process, the FEMP Waste Management Program and specifics regarding radioactive waste, asbestos (1332214) waste, and polychlorinated-biphenyl contaminated waste. Three select HW, DD, and CW activities per group were presented as case studies. These were based on actual historic activities at the site and further illustrated the function and responsibilities of these worker groups." NIOSHTIC-2
