Description:Methodology used in the Soviet Union for determination of behavioral and neurophysiological effects of toxic agents is reviewed. The standard Soviet behavioral toxicology methods summarized were: olfactory sensation; eye or light sensitivity; electroencephalogram (EEG) unconditioned reflex; EEG conditioned reflex; EEG photic driving; optical chronaxy; general motor activity; chronaximetry; motor response latency; and motor operant conditioning. The authors state that use of these neurophysiological toxicity tests has resulted in the establishment of lower maximal allowable concentrations in the Soviet Union than those set in the United States.
