Description:A one-and-a-half day, open public meeting of the Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC), Office of Infectious Diseases (OID), was held on December 9-10, 2015, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to Board members and CDC staff, the meeting was attended by representatives of several public health partner organizations (Appendix).
Focused discussions were held on Legionella infections and on climate change. The meeting also included reports from the Board’s two active working groups—the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Surveillance Workgroup (FSMA SWG) and the Infectious Disease Laboratory Workgroup (IDLWG); as part of the IDLWG session, an update on CDC’s advanced molecular detection (AMD) initiative was given. Additional updates and discussion topics were provided from the Center for Global Health (CGH), the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), and the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP).1
The meeting also included a brief conversation with
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden.
During the discussion that followed the FSMA update, the BSC approved a motion to send the annual FSMA report to the HHS Secretary.
